 Importance of Counseling

Is counseling necessary at the elementary level?  Yes, definitely.  I explain to the children it is my job to make sure that all children feel good about themselves and feel good about school.  If they don’t then, it is my job to help them.  When students have good self-esteem they have the confidence to persevere.  All though in my opinion, parents have the most important job, it is my job to listen and support your child with you to seek solutions to problems or coping skills to deal with them.

Confidentiality and Records

Confidentiality is very important in developing trust with students.  However, confidentiality is NOT possible when:

1.      an individual may be harmful to himself/herself

2.      an individual may pose harm to another person

3.      another person pose harm to the individual i.e. suicide threats, abuse, terroristic threats

All groups and individual guidance information is confidential and no guidance information is placed in a child’s permanent record file.

 Referrals

Anyone may make a referral – a child, parent, teacher, staff or administration.  Sometimes only one session is needed.  Other times students may be seen on an

on-going basis.

 Groups

Oakview and Red Bank Schools offer support groups for children dealing with the following concerns:

v        a death in the family

v        parents who are divorced or separated

v        self-esteem issues

v        anger management

These groups and sessions are held as needed and designed to meet the needs of all students.

 Classroom Lessons

In addition to individual and small group counseling I provide lessons in the classroom.  Lesson topics could include:  respect, responsibility, citizenship, caring, tolerance, bullying, problem-solving, test taking skills, etc.
